There's Time ..... to Grow!

Now that we are in August, some of you (like me) are probably wondering where your summer has gone as you realize that the time for gardening left is limited. But, there is good news! There is still enough time to get lots more out of your garden this year.

Realizing that I neglected my garden for most of July, I have turned to quick growing vege's that will give me a harvest before it gets too cold. There are a number of options but below I have noted a couple of great "fast growing" varieties of fall garden veges.

Garden Update May 6, 2014

It's been a busy weekend in the garden. I tilled the tomato row and covered it with a new black cloth as well as planter the first four tomato plants. I got these as a steal for $2 each at home depot. Now I just have to keep my fingers crossed that I did not plant these out too early. 

I also had a nice daffodil "harvest" and was particularly excited that the Tahiti Daffodils came back this year. They are my faves! I also planted some Thai basil in the community plot as well as four little pots on my patio.

Finally feels like Spring.

First Yellow Crookneck Squash Flower

I had a quick visit to the garden today. I was very excited to see the flower on my squash plant. I was much less excited to see that my carrot bed was covered with weeds. The carrot tops were falling over and in many cases disconnected from the carrot itself. What happened to the carrots? I am hoping they are there somewhere still. On a side note, I harvested 6 pea pods or so.

Biggest Harvest Yet

We had quite a big harvest today with carrots, lettuce, some green tomatoes and a handful of cucumbers. We decided to pick the tomatoes while they were greenish/yellow to prevent someone else from stealing them. We were very sad to find that someone had broken in to our garden last week and while they did not steal anything (that we could notice) the perpetrator did break half of our fence.

Gone ... the Peas are Gone

Imagine my disappointment when I saw that all the leaves on my pea plants were gone. After figuring out that this was not the work of weather or disease .. I found the true culprits ... RABBITS!!I realized this as I saw the baby bunnies admiring the lettuce plants two lots over.

My next step (of course) is to remedy the situation by planting more pea plants and figuring out a way to protect them. Fencing and netting is always an option but I was considering planting chives all over the place instead. Has anyone had any luck with keeping rabbits away?
