DIY Seedtape

I was sowing my first batch of seeds today and started remembering how tiny many of these are. In fact, I found the tiny alpine strawberry seeds hiding under my fingernails. Planting these outdoors is even trickier due to sun/wind/ etc. I've done my research and this year will create seed tape for those direct sow veges (ie carrots, beets, lettuce). Here's how:

  1. Take a roll of  toilet paper and cut the necessary length in half lengthwise.
  2. Mark seed spacing with a pen/pencil as directed on packet. (Note: consider alternating crops on seed tape)
  3. Add a dab of non-toxic glue to each pencil mark (Note: glue can be substituted for a flour / water mixture)
  4. Pour the seeds out onto a plate, then spread them around a little to make them easy to pick up. Using tweezers (or tiny fingers), pick up a seed and place it on one of the drops of glue.
  5. Once the seed tape has had time to dry roll it back onto the toilet paper roll and store in a cool dry place until ready to plant. (Note:  when planting secure a rock on both ends of the tape to prevent it from blowing away.

Continue until you've placed seeds on all the glue drop - See more at: http://www.hgtvgardens.com/diy-garden-projects/make-toilet-paper-seed-tape#sthash.IVRs6yWG.dpuf
